80th Jubilarian
Sister Virginia Ross was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1944 and was received into the novitiate in 1945 as Sister Mary Timothy later returning to her baptismal name. She received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Fontbonne College (now University), St. Louis in 1959 and a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana in 1964.
Sister Virginia was an educator, beginning her years of service as a teacher at St. Joseph Indian School in 1947 in Keshena, Wisconsin, and then teaching at St. Mary of the Assumption in Waco, Texas, in 1948. From 1950 to 1959 she taught at Our Lady of Lourdes Grade School in St. Louis. She then taught at Sacred Heart Central High School in Indianapolis until 1964. Sister Virgina taught at the Academy of Our Lady in Peoria, Illinois from 1964 to 1975 and along with teaching, had the additional responsibility of principal from 1968 to 1975.
Joining the Peace Corps for two years, she taught in Ghana, West Africa. She returned to the United States and taught chemistry at St. Joseph’s Academy in St. Louis for one year.
From 1979 to 1996, Sister Virginia served in the Diocese of Savannah. She was the Vicar for Education and the Superintendent of Schools. In 1991, she was the principal of St. Peter Claver Grade School in Macon, Georgia. In 1996, she semi-retired and taught at St. Peter the Apostle Grade School in Savannah until 2017.
Sister Virginia returned to St. Louis in 2017 and has resided at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis where she carries out her mission of prayer and presence.
