70th Jubilee
Sister Joan Elizabeth Tolle was born in Kansas City, Missouri. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1954 and was received into the novitiate in 1955 as Sister Jerome Francis, later returning to her baptismal name. She received a bachelor’s degree in Latin from Fontbonne College (now University), St. Louis in 1965.
Sister Joan taught in St. Louis, Missouri at St. Thomas of Aquin Grade School1957-1958; Sts. Mary & Joseph Grade School 1958-60; St. Edward Grade School 1960-63; and St. Thomas the Apostle Grade School 1963-64.
She taught at St. Mary Cathedral Grade School in Peoria, Illinois 1964-65; Sacred Heart Grade School in L’anse, Michigan in 1965; Holy Rosary Grade School in Kansas City, Missouri 1965-66; and returned to St. Louis to teach at Sts. John & James Grade School 1966-72. In 1972, she taught at St. Peter Grade School in Marquette, Michigan. The following year, Sister Joan was the secretary for the Jefferson City Religious Education Office in Jefferson City, Missouri.
In 1974 she served at Nazareth Convent (now Nazareth Living Center) in St. Louis, first as a secretary and then as a personnel assistant.
Beginning in 1984 she served 20 years as a computer resource center moderator at St. Teresa’s Academy in Kansas City, Missouri.
Sister Joan retired in 2014. Since 2019 she has resided at Nazareth Living Center where she carries out her mission of prayer and presence.
