Sister Catherine Agnes Wagner, CSJ

Sister Catherine Agnes Wagner, baptized Jeanette Colleen, was born in Atchison, Kansas. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1949 and was received into the novitiate in 1950. She earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the College of St. Teresa (now Avila University), Kansas City, Missouri in 1955 and a master’s degree in nursing education from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1969.
In 1952, Sister Catherine taught in St. Louis at St. Mary Magdalen and St. Edward schools.
After earning her bachelor’s degree in 1955, she then began a career in nursing that spanned 30 years. In the 1950s, she was a nursing supervisor at St. Joseph Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri (1956-58). She was then a clinical education/supervising nurse at St. Joseph Community Hospital in Hancock, Michigan, through 1966.
After earning her master’s degree, Sister Catherine was a nursing school instructor at Avila College (now University), in Kansas City from 1969 to 1970. The following year, she was a team member on the patient care improvement project at St. Mary Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
In the 1970s, she served as the patient care improvement project coordinator at St. Joseph Hospital (now SSM Health St. Clare Hospital) in Kirkwood, Missouri, and as anursing educator/program developer at Michigan Tech University in Houghton, Michigan.
In the late 1971s and early 80s, Sister Catherine Ann worked in St. Louis, as a nurse at Incarnate Word Hospital and Mount St. Rose hospitals as well as with the Visiting Nurse Association. She also provided home health care service for her CSJ community.
In the late 1980s and 1990s, she was a cosmetologist in St. Louis at Nazareth Living Center and at CSJ Cosmetology Service. From 1998 to 2002, she cared for family in Atchison, Kansas.
Since 2004, Sister Catherine has resided at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis where she continues to carry out her ministry of prayer and presence.
