Sister Phyllis Bardenheier

Sister Phyllis Bardenheier was born in St. Louis. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1955 and was received into the novitiate in 1956 as Sister Alberta Marie. She received a bachelor’s degree in history from Fontbonne College in 1960 and a master’s degree in library science from Rosary College in 1969.

Sister Phyllis has served 54 years in education. She began teaching at American Martyrs Grade School in Kingsford, Michigan (1960-61); St. Matthew Grade School in Mobile, Alabama (1961-64); and at St. Mary Grade School in Bridgeton, Missouri (1964-69).

She was librarian at St. Bede the Venerable Grade School in Chicago (1969-75, 1977-79); at St. Joseph Grade School in Muskogee, Oklahoma (1975-76); and at St. Teresa’s Academy in Kansas City, Missouri (1976-77).

In St. Louis, Sister Phyllis was librarian at St. Gregory Grade School (1979-80) and at St. Louis Cathedral Grade School (1979-92). She served at St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf as librarian/media center coordinator from 1993 to 2002 and then as library consultant from 2002 to 2014. She also served in home service for CSJ Care from 2002 to 2014.

Sister Phyllis retired in 2014 and continues her ministry of prayer and presence.
