70th Jubilee
Sister Patricia Murphy was born in St. Louis. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1955 and was received into the novitiate in 1956 as Sister Michael Patrick. She received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Fontbonne College in 1962 and a master’s degree in educational psychology from the University of Minnesota, St. Paul in 1970.
Sister Pat began teaching in St. Louis at St. Agnes Grade School (1960-61), St. Jude Grade School (1961-63), St. Thomas Aquinas/Mercy High School (1963-65), St. Joseph’s Academy (1965-66) and St. Joseph’s Home for Boys (1966-69). After attending the University of Minnesota, she returned to St. Louis and taught again at St. Joseph’s Home for Boys (1970-73) and St. Jude Grade School (1973-74).
She taught in Chicago at St. Viator Grade School (1974-75) and the St. Joseph Carondelet Child Center (1975-77).
Sister Pat served the next six years in St. Louis. She taught at Holy Guardian Angels Grade School in special education (1977-78) and junior high (1978-80). She was the assistant principal and teacher at St. Joseph’s Home for Boys (1980-82) and taught at St. Matthew the Apostle Grade School (1982-83).
She taught one year in Champaign, Illinois, at Holy Cross Grade School and served the next year as a parish minister at St. Elizabeth Grade School in Kansas City, Missouri.
In 1986, she served eight years as a junior high teacher at Valle Grade School in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri. The following year, Sister Pat was a residential counselor at Girl’s Hope in St. Louis.
Sister Pat served the next six years as a computer teacher in Honolulu, Hawaii, at St. Theresa Grade School (1995-99) and at Holy Family Catholic Academy (1999-2001).
Returning to Missouri in 2002, she taught one year at St. Joseph Grade School in Manchester. At First Christian Church in Fulton, Missouri, Sister Pat was the secretary/receptionist/bookkeeper from 2003 to 2005. She served her CSJ community as a province treasurer member for one year and then as the health care claims coordinator for two.
Beginning in 2008, Sister Pat dedicated the next three years to the St. Louis province’s Uganda Project and served in East Africa.
In 2012, she was a volunteer at the Whole Health Outreach in Ellington, Missouri.
From 2015 to 2018, Sister Pat returned to East Africa to serve once again on the Uganda Project.
Since returning to St. Louis in 2018, Sister Pat continues to volunteer.
