70th Jubilee
Sister Barbara Ann Moore was born in Memphis, Tennessee. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1955 and was received into the novitiate in 1956 as Sister Anne Benedict. She received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the College of St. Teresa, Kansas City (now Avila University) in 1962; master’s degrees in nursing from the University of California, San Francisco in 1996 and in sociology from the University of Washington, Seattle in 1973. She received a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Washington, Seattle in 1977.
Sister Barbara has served nearly 50 years in nursing. She began nursing at the old St. Joseph Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, as staff nurse (1962-64), head nurse (1963-64) and nursing supervisor (1964-65).
She earned her master’s degree the next year at the University of San Francisco. She taught nursing at Avila College from 1996 to 1969. She attended the University of Washington in Seattle from 1969-76?? earning her a second master’s degree in sociology.
After receiving her master’s in sociology from the University of Washington in Seattle, Sister Barbara returned to Avila College where she taught nursing for the next 12 years. In 1988, Sister Barbara served 10 years as the program coordinator/maternal child health at the Samuel Rodgers Community Health Center in Kansas City. She was the project director for the Kansas City Healthy Start program at the Heart of America United Way.
She served her CSJ community on the Congregational Leadership Team at the Congregational Center in 2002-08 when it was located at St. Joseph’s Academy campus in St. Louis.
Returning from a brief sabbatical, she was a nurse in 2009 at Advance Medical Services, Wellness Center in St. Louis. For the next six years, Sister Barbara volunteered at Microfinancing Partners in Africa.
Sister retired in 2015 and serves in volunteer service.
