60th Jubilee
Sister Rose was born in Hemple, Missouri. She entered the Sisters of St Joseph of Carondelet in 1962 and was received into the novitiate in 1963 as Sister Maria Charles. She earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the College of St Teresa Kansas City in 1962 and a masters degree in nursing from St Louis University in 1968.
For nearly 20 years, Sister Rose served at St Joseph Hospital Center for Life in Augusta, Georgia, first in coronary care, then home health/hospice director, then as assistant administrator and finally as vice president of planning/marketing. She then served in Kansas City for three years at Carondelet Health Corporation as the vice president of planning/marketing.
Beginning in 1990 Sister Rose served on leadership for the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph as general councilor until 1998.
For the next 10 years, Sister Rose directed the Center for Women in Transition, helping recently incarcerated women to make positive choices and lead stable lives. She helped establish the Missouri Restorative Justice Coalition and continues in a leadership role today.
Sister returned to Kansas City in 2008 and worked until 2010 with Catholic Charities Turn Around for men and women returning from prison. She was an instructor in Restorative Justice at Avila University from 2010 to 2013. She was a co-founder of Journey to New Life, serving men and women coming from prison. For six years, Sister Rose, along with three other sisters, lived in the residence for women coming from prison. She completed nine years as board chair of Journey to New Life and now helps with the fundraising. She has volunteered with Center for Conflict Resolution providing restorative justice to the Kansas City area and is chair of the board of directors. She also serves on the board of St.Teresa's Academy.
Sister Rose received the St Louis Archdiocesan Women’s Award: Dorothy Day Justice Seeker in 2002 and the Avila University Outstanding Alumni Award for her work with restorative justice in 2010.
