Jubilarian 2023 - Sister Patricia Marie Hix

Sister Patricia Marie, baptized Dorothy Marie, was born in Kansas City, Missouri. She was received into the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1943. She received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Fontbonne College in 1954 and a master’s degree in mathematics from St. Louis University in 1963.

Sister Patricia served all of her active ministry in education. She taught from 1945 until 1954 in the Archdiocese of St. Louis at St. Patrick Grade School, Our Lady of the Presentation, Immaculate Conception Grade School, and St. Rita Grade School.

In 1954, Sister Patricia taught on the secondary level at Redemptorist High School in Kansas City then he following year at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Florissant, Missouri. Sister Patricia then taught elementary school at Most Blessed Sacrament Grade School in St. Louis.

In 1961, Sister Patricia transitioned to higher education at Fontbonne University. In 1964, she served as the dean of Avila College in Kansas City, a position she held until 1970.

Carrying out the original mission of the founding sisters, Sister Patricia served the next 34 years at St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf where she served as a teacher from 1971 to 1990. She then served as their afternoon receptionist until 2005.

Sister Patricia retired to Nazareth Living Center in 2005. In 2011, she moved to Cut Bank, Montana, where she volunteered. In 2019, Sister Patricia relocated to Minnetonka, Minnesota, and continued in volunteer ministry.

Since March of 2023, she has resided at Nazareth Living Center where she continues to carry out her ministry of prayer and presence.
