Jubilarian 2023 - Sister Maureen Langton

Sister Maureen, baptized Mary Therese, was born in Peoria, Ilinois. After graduation from Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas, with a B.A. degree in home economics/history in 1962, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In 1963, Sister Maureen was received into the novitiate as Sister Michael Maureen.

Since making her first profession in 1965, Sister Maureen was involved in Catholic deaf ministry as a teacher at various Catholic schools for the deaf in St. Louis and Chicago. In 1980, Sister Maureen felt a call to work with Catholic deaf adults in pastoral ministry. While studying for her master’s degree at Gallaudet College and The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., Sister Maureen was a caption-script writer for elementary schools for the deaf throughout the nation.

After completing her studies, Sister Maureen received an invitation from Terrance Cardinal Cooke of New York City to work with Catholic deaf in his archdiocese as a pastoral minister.

After eight years there, Sister returned to the Midwest to help assist her elderly family members on weekends. During that time, she worked as a counselor and teacher at a Catholic school for the deaf in Chicago. While there, she helped co-found the Ministry Formation Program preparing Catholic deaf to become Catholic church lay ministers in their respective dioceses throughout the nation. She wrote many articles for various magazines on Catholic deaf ministry.

After 23 years serving in other dioceses, Sister Maureen returned to St. Louis and founded Companions Ministry/Home Care Program for the local deaf elderly and directed it until her retirement in 2009.

Sister Maureen's retirement years still find her continuing volunteer work with the local deaf and family care, giving presentations and retreats to the deaf in other dioceses and overseas, and rooting for the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish football games.
