50th Jubilee
Sister Mary was born in Denver, Colorado. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1972 and was received into the novitiate in 1973. Sister Mary received bachelors’ degrees in theology and sociology from Marquette University in 1970, a master’s degree in theology from the University of San Francisco in 1981 and a doctorate in theology from St. Louis University in 1991.
Before entering the Sisters of St. Joseph, Sister Mary taught high school in Denver and served as a youth minister with Catholic Youth Service of the Archdiocese of Denver.
From 1975 to 1976 she was the first full-time campus minister at Fontbonne College in St. Louis, Missouri. She then spent four years as a campus minister at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. After receiving her master’s degree, Sister Mary ministered in Peru for six years, working in pastoral ministry and seminary teaching. She returned to Peru to do dissertation research and later to write the history of Carondelet’s vice-province of Peru. (Comunidad Para el Mundo)
After returning to St. Louis at the end of 1987, she earned her doctorate. From 1991 to 1998, Sister Mary was an assistant professor of theology at Avila College (now Avila University). For the following four years she served her CSJ community on the Congregational Leadership Team.
From 2004 to 2014, she served in Denver as executive director for the nonprofit FUVIRESE USA. Sister Mary also served on the vocation/formation ministry team for her CSJ community from 2004 to 2010.
In 2014, she relocated to St. Louis and began writing the history of the Sisters of St. Joseph in America. In 2020, she began a six-year term as a member of the Congregational Leadership Team.
In addition to other works, she has published two volumes on the history of the Sisters of St. Joseph in America, Anything of Which a Woman is Capable and Called Forth by the Dear Neighbor. She also writes weekly commentaries on the Sunday scriptures for the National Catholic Reporter.
