Jubilarian - 2022 Sister Maureen Freeman

Sister Maureen was born on January 3, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois, to Edward and Mary Catherine (Cotter) Freeman. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1961 after graduating from Little Flower High School. In 1962 she was received into the novitiate as Sister Edward Marian. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Fontbonne College in 1966 and a master’s of divinity from Weston School of Theology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1982.

Sister Maureen began her ministry in education at schools in Denver and Chicago. In 1968 she was missioned to Peru, serving as a teacher, principal and parish administrator for 10 years. Upon returning to the states, she served as parish administrator in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and in the Village of Holy Cross, Alaska.

She was a leader for her community from 1998 to 2002, serving on the Congregational Leadership Team for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

Sister Maureen began her ministry at White Violet Center for Eco-Justice in 2002. Located in Saint Mary of the Woods in Indiana, White Violet Center offers leadership and education in the preservation, restoration and reverent use of all natural resources. Sister Maureen served as an administrative assistant, executive assistant and as director throughout her 12 years with the organization.

Sister Maureen began serving her CSJ community in Province Leadership until 2019, at which point she retired while continuing to volunteer. Sister Maureen moved to St. Louis in 2020, where she continues organizing volunteer work at the Texas/Mexico border.
