60th Jubilee
Sister Sandra Straub was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1960 and was received into the novitiate in 1961 as Sister Veronica Ann. She earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Fontbonne College in St. Louis in 1965 and a master’s degree in biology from St. Mary College in Winona, Minnesota, in 1974.
Sister Sandra began her 60 years of ministry teaching on the elementary school level. She taught at St. John Grade School (1965-66) in Ishpeming, Michigan; St. Gregory School (1966-67) in St. Ann, Missouri; and at St. Louis Grade School (1967-69) in Englewood, Colorado.
For the next 14 years, Sister Sandra served in education on the secondary level. She taught and was team administrator at St. Joseph’s Academy (1969-1977) in St. Louis. She was the principal at Reicher Catholic High School in Waco, Texas, and was the director of curriculum/public relations at St. Pius X High School (1982-83) in Houston, Texas. The following year, she served as the liturgy coordinator at St. Rose of Lima Parish in Houston. Sister Sandra served as assistant principal and principal at Rosati-Kain High School in St. Louis from 1985 to 1989.
Sister Sandra served in South America from 1989 to 1995. She served as a pastoral minister at the Instituto de Idiomas in Cochabamba, Bolivia, and at Iglesia San Lorenzo in Arequipa, Peru. She then served as a pastoral agent at San Juan De Lurigancho in Lima, Peru, and at Posta Pillas in Arequipa, Peru.
Returning state side, she served as the diocesan director of Hispanic Ministry for the Diocese of Springfield/Cape Girardeu at the Catholic Center in Springfield, Missouri, from 1996 to 2002.
She served her CSJ community on the Province Leadership Team for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet from 2002 to 2008. After a year-long sabbatical, she served three years as the director of mission integration at St. Anthony’s Medical Center. From 2012 to 2014, she was the novice director for her CSJ community.
Sister Sandra retired in 2014 and continues to volunteer. She enjoys watching sports, reading, barbequing and being in the company of family and friends.
