Sister Mary Ann Figlino was born in Denver, Colorado. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1959 and was received into the novitiate in 1960 as Sister Marie David. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Fontbonne College in 1964, a master’s degree in early childhood education from University of Northern Colorado in 1974, and a master’s in scripture from Iliff School of Theology in 1997.
Sister Mary Ann taught at Our Lady of Lourdes in Raytown, Missouri, for one year before teaching at Holy Rosary in St. Louis for the following seven years.
Throughout the 1970s, Sister Mary Ann taught at various schools: St. Patrick in Denver (1970-72); St. Elizabeth in Kansas City, Missouri (1972-74); St. James in Denver (1974-75); and St. Mary in Waco, Texas (1975-80). In the early 1980s, she taught at St. Mary in Littleton, Colorado (1980-82).
For the next two years, Sister Mary Ann was the chaplain at St. Anthony Hospital North in Westminster, Colorado. From there, she was Director of Formation at Ave Maria Church in Parker, Colorado (1988- 1995).
Sister Mary Ann’s career turned to ex-felons getting their GED at the Empowerment Program in Denver. (1995-2010). While there, she started Project Bedtime Story. Each week, she would go to the jail with children’s books and blank cassette tapes. Moms would record reading a book for their child(ren), then the book and tape were mailed to the child(ren), thus keeping parents and children united.
Sister Mary Ann retired in 2010 and worked part time arranging flowers at Diz’s Daisey in Denver. Today, she teaches scripture to four different groups in the Denver area. And … enjoys retirement!
