Associate Mary O'Neil

25th Jubilarian

Mary O'Neill and her husband Rea, have built a life spanning 54 years of marriage, raising five children and welcoming seven grandchildren into their family. They continue to reside in the Fenton, Missouri, home they built in 1971, where their family story has unfolded over decades.

As a registered nurse, Mary devoted nearly 30 years to emergency and trauma nursing. Her nursing education at City Hospital and Homer G. Phillips Hospital in St. Louis, instilled in her a commitment to serving underserved populations—a value that has remained consistent throughout her professional life.

A pivotal moment in Mary's career came in 1996, when she discovered a class called Healing Touch. Intrigued by the concept of touch as a healing modality, she attended the first session and experienced an immediate transformation. That evening marked a profound shift, in both her nursing practice and personal life, as she recognized she had found what she describes as "the heart and soul of nursing." Mary became a certified Healing Touch Practitioner in 1999, which led her to leave emergency nursing and establish her own private practice. Two years later, she advanced to become a certified Healing Touch Instructor and now teaches all five levels of the Healing Beyond Borders Curriculum. This healing work has deepened her spirituality as she serves a diverse clientele presenting various complex issues in their search for wholeness, balance and healing.

Mary's connection to the Sisters of St. Joseph extends throughout most of her life. Her aunt, Sister Joan Marie Gleason, served as a significant influence, mentor and friend. Mary cherishes memories of conversations with her aunt about Vatican II developments, feeling privileged to gain insights into the changes taking place in the Church. Sister Joan Marie was the first to introduce Mary to the concept of Association. After her aunt's passing, Sister Mary Huey continued the invitation, encouraging Mary to consider this spiritual path.

Mary firmly believes that the CSJ charism has been a grace in her life, nursing career and Healing Touch ministry. Through her work, she has recognized Christ in "the dear neighbor" in numerous circumstances and feels humbled to bring the gift of healing presence to others. For Mary, the CSJ charism has been a guiding light throughout her journey.

For those interested in becoming an associate, Mary recommends taking time for questions, reading, prayer and open-hearted discernment, describing the journey as truly amazing.
