Statement on Gun Violence

2024 Violence Statement Email Header

In light of the recent disturbing news, we are deeply saddened and troubled. While our nation grapples with strong disagreements and divisive rhetoric, we, as Sisters of St. Joseph, must emphatically state that violence is never the answer. Our faith teaches us the sanctity of human life, the importance of peaceful resolution to our differences and that all people are our dear neighbor.

As Catholics, we are called to be peacemakers and bridge-builders. In these challenging times, we must redouble our efforts to lower the temperature of our political discourse. This does not mean ignoring real issues or the concerns of communities who are most affected by current policies. Rather, it means approaching our disagreements with respect, empathy and a willingness to listen.

We believe that every person is created in the image of God and deserves to be treated with dignity. This belief compels us to speak out against the epidemic of gun violence in our country and to work towards solutions that protect all members of our community. Our hearts break not only for the victims of political violence, but also for the innocent lives lost to gun violence in our schools and the countless civilians caught in the crossfire of wars around the world.

We call on all people to join us in prayer - for those affected by this incident, for our leaders, for one another and for our nation. We also recognize that prayer must be coupled with action. In the words of Bernice King, “Sincere, love-centered calls for ‘unity’ must be accompanied by work for true peace, which includes justice.” She goes on to quote her father, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “Justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love.”

Ways to Take Action

  • Virtual Prayer Spaces for Election Season

The Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) invites you to 24 hours of contemplative prayer throughout the days of the United States Republican and Democratic National Conventions and the days of the National Election. LCWR created this experience to mirror the practice of adoration familiar to many of us. There will be no presentations or comments during the virtual gathering, just opportunities for silence and prayer. Click here to learn more.

  • Nuns Against Gun Violence

Nuns Against Gun Violence is a coalition of Catholic Sisters and their allies that affirms the value of human life through prayer, education, and advocacy for common sense, evidence-based, gun violence prevention. Click here to learn more.

  • Transforming Grace

“Transforming Grace,” an initiative by LCWR, invites participants to take responsibility for the personal and collective responses we can make in the challenges we will encounter during the national election period. The initiative follows the liturgical calendar. During each liturgical season, participants receive a weekly or monthly one-page reflection guide that includes: a short video, a brief reading, two or three questions intended to deepen conversation, and a prayer grounded in our contemplative commitment. The materials are designed to be used in groups such as leadership teams, justice committees, employee groups, and gatherings of sisters and partners in mission. Each reflection tool will be designed for a 60-75 minute session. Click here to learn more.
