In April, the St. Teresa’s Academy (STA) community gathered to honor Sister Barbara Moore, as the school celebrated the first recipients of the Sister Barbara Moore Scholarship, who graduated this year. The event featured an inspiring student speaker and a captivating performance by the STA choir, which premiered "Let Nothing Disturb You," a soulful piece composed by STA accompanist, Robert Pherigo, inspired by the words of St. Teresa of Avila.

The ceremony culminated in the unveiling and blessing of Sister Barbara Moore, In Quiet Reflection, a stunning portrait created by artist Kwanza Humphrey. This moment marked a significant step toward achieving STA's goal of increasing the number of Black students on campus, reflecting our mission to mirror the diversity of our community and the world.

The Sister Barbara Moore Scholarship Program, the first of its kind at STA, aims to bring more Black students into our school. Starting in the 2021-2022 academic year, this scholarship provides substantial tuition assistance and support for uniforms, lunches and extracurricular activities. In exchange, scholarship students will pursue a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Certificate at STA, which enhances their access to high-growth job opportunities.

Sister Barbara is a true trailblazer and a beacon of hope. As the first African American to enter the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1955, she has dedicated her life to STEAM and continues to inspire women of color. We are deeply honored to have her support and endorsement for this vital scholarship program at STA.
