Statement from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet

We, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Louis Province, are appalled by the attempt of the Texas Attorney General to dismantle and discredit the sacred work of Annunciation House in providing shelter and aid to refugees in El Paso for over 46 years. Their unfounded accusations go against the very principles of human dignity, compassion and hospitality that are central to both Catholic social teaching and interfaith values.

Annunciation House's mission aligns wholly with our own congregation's belief in "serving the dear neighbor without distinction" and upholding the dignity and humanity of all people, especially the poor and marginalized. Their work embodies the words of the Gospel to feed the hungry, welcome the stranger and care for our most vulnerable brothers and sisters.

We urge the Attorney General to cease these unfounded attacks and dangerous accusations. Annunciation House is conducting holy work that is recognized and supported by Catholic institutions nationwide, as well as interfaith groups. If their work is deemed illegal, then too is the work of our churches, hospitals, schools and organizations serving the poor and newly arrived.

The targeting of this esteemed organization and attempt to dismantle their holy work of welcoming the stranger is an affront not just to Catholic values, but to basic human decency. This coordinated campaign of intimidation is an effort to dehumanize.

We cannot accept any world that sheltering the homeless and feeding the hungry are criminal offenses.
