Sister Marie de Montfort Deken: 1929-2019

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Marie de Montfort Deken, who passed away on June 4, 2019, at Mercy South Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. She was 89 years of age.

Sister Marie de Montfort was born on September 3, 1929, in St. Louis to parents Alphonse Anthony and Adelheide (Fleischmann) Deken. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on February 11, 1951, and made her final profession on August 15, 1958.

She received a bachelor’s degree in science from Fontbonne College in 1962.

Sister Marie began her 67 years of ministry teaching. She taught at St. Matthew the Apostle Grade School in St. Louis (1953-1958); Nativity of our Lord Grade School in Chicago, Illinois (1958-1960) and (1972-1973); St. Mary Grade School in Littleton, Colorado (1960-1962); Saints John & James Grade School in Ferguson, Missouri (1962-1966) and (1970-1972); St. Louis Grade School in Englewood, Colorado (1966-1969); Immaculate Conception Grade School in Montgomery City, Missouri (1969-1970); Holy Angels Grade School in Indianapolis, Indiana (1970); Little Flower Grade School in Mobile, Alabama (1973-1976); Holy Guardian Angels Grade School in St. Louis (1976-1977); St. Mary on the Hill Grade School in Augusta, Georgia (1977-1978); St. Joseph’s Home for Boys in St. Louis (1978-1979); and St. Viator Grade School in Chicago (1979-1980).

Returning to St. Louis for the remaining years of ministry, Sister Marie was an administrative staff member for St. Joseph’s Academy Convent from 1980 to 1986. She then taught at Holy Family School (1986-1988) and St. Luke the Evangelist Grade School (1988-1989).

Sister Marie served in pastoral work at St. Anthony Parish as the sacristan from 1991 to 1994 and was a pastoral ministry volunteer at Resurrection Parish from 1995 to 1998. And for 13 years, she volunteered at St. John the Baptist Parish.

Since 2014, Sister Marie had been living at Nazareth Living Center, carrying out her ministry of prayer and presence.

The funeral Mass will be held June 11, 2019, at 10 a.m., viewing at 9 a.m. at Nazareth Living Center, 2 Nazareth Lane, St. Louis, MO 63129.
