Sister Marianne Dwyer: 1934-2019

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Marianne Dwyer, who passed away on March 3 at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis, Missouri. She was 84.

Sister Marianne was born on September 28, 1934, in St. Louis, Missouri, to parents John F. and Mary Evelyn (Bergen) Dwyer. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1961, was received as Sister Evelyn John, and made her final profession on August 6, 1969.

She received a bachelor’s degree in English from Fontbonne College in 1966 and a master’s in English literature from Ohio State University in 1975.

Sister Marianne served 54 years in the Archdiocese of St. Louis.  Before entering the Sisters of St. Joseph she taught at St. Edwards and Seven Holy Founds schools for six years.

As a Sister of St. Joseph she taught in the 60’s and 70s at St. Margaret of Scotland Grade School, St. Thomas Aquinas High School and St. Joseph Academy in St. Louis, and at Kennedy High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. In the early 1980s, she taught grade school in St. Louis at St. Cecelia and Sts. John and James.

From 1983-1992, Sister Marianne served her CSJ community as the coordinator of publications for the Sisters of St. Joseph.  She was also administrative secretary at Nazareth Living Center (1993-1994). 

Her last twenty years of active ministry included being a literacy tutor for the Literacy Council of Greater St. Louis, a master teacher for the St. Louis Public Schools Adult Education and Literacy program and as education coordinator for the Literacy Council and the Carondelet Family Literacy programs.

Sister Marianne retired in 2008 and, since 2010, she had been living at Nazareth Living Center, carrying out her ministry of prayer and presence

The funeral Mass will be held Monday, March 18.  Viewing will be at 9 a.m. and the service will start at 10 a.m. at Nazareth Living Center, 2 Nazareth Lane, St. Louis, MO 63129.
