Dear all,

Two weeks ago I was with our sisters in Canto Chico, a little “sector” of Lima. The town is built on hills and is poor. We Sisters have been in Canto Chico for 30 years.

The house has three stories. I stayed on the top floor and had a bird’s eye view of the neighborhood. I saw people walking down the road to work; others were going to school.

Some rode up and down hills in moto-taxis, tiny cars for two people. One day there was a parade of moto-taxis to celebrate the anniversary of their company!

Our ministry in Canto Chico is to serve the dear neighbor by distributing food to people who prepare meals for others. Sisters Anne and Yolanda distribute food on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Women gather food, prepare and serve a meal for 100 persons in different areas of the town. Their Project is called “olla comun.” (common cooking pot).

Our after-school program helps children with their homework so they can graduate from secondary school.

Sister Zaida introduced me to our dear neighbors who welcomed us into their homes. We enjoyed conversation, hugs and smiles!

I will return to Canto Chico the last week of November before I return to St. Louis on December 3. I plan to work with the children, meet the women preparing the common cooking pot, share prayer and meals with the sisters and go to mass at the San Pablo Capilla.

I am blessed to be with our sisters in Peru who open their hearts to the dear neighbor and foster community where they live. Our charism of loving unity with God and all others is alive and well in Peru 😊

Peace in God’s great love,

Margaret
