Sister Joyce M. Landreman, CSJ 1928-2020

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Joyce Landreman who passed away on Nov. 17 at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis, Missouri. She was 92 years of age.

Sister Joyce was born on October 21, 1928, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to parents Norbert Henry and Emma Marie (Mayer) Landreman. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1951 and was received into the novitiate in 1952 as Sister Norbert Mary. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Fontbonne College in 1962 and a master’s degree in elementary education from St. Louis University in 1968.

Sister Joyce was a teacher for 20 years. She taught at St. Gregory Grade School in St. Ann, Missouri (1954-1961); St. Fancis de Sales Grade School in Denver, Colorado (1961-1962); and at Sacred Heart Grade School in Muskogee, Oklahoma (1962-1963), where she also served as both teacher and principal (1963-1965).

Back in Missouri, Sister Joyce was the principal at Our Lady of Lourdes Grade School in Raytown (1965-1968), and she served as principal and teacher at St. Patrick Grade School in St. Joseph (1968-1969).

She then taught in Georgia at St. Mary on the Hill Grade School in Augusta (1969-1970) and at St. Joseph Grade School in Marietta (1970-1972). Her last year of teaching was at St. Catherine of Siena Grade School in Denver (1972-1973).

After teaching, Sister Joyce went on to serve as the parish secretary at St. Ann in Arvada, Colorado. Four years later, she served her CSJ community as secretary at the St. Joseph Provincial House in St. Louis. In 1978, she served as the parish secretary at St. Elizabeth Parish in Kansas City, Missouri. She was then the pastoral assistant at St. Catherine of Sienna Parish in St. Louis from 1980 to 1982.

Sister Joyce spent four years in Houston, Texas, as the adult education coordinator for St. Rose of Lima Parish. After a year-long sabbatical in Wisconsin, she served in Green Bay as a pastoral assistant at St. Jude Parish (1987-1991); a receptionist at Brown County Commission on Aging (1991-1993), and as an adult education teacher of English as a second language at Nicolet Elementary School (1998-2005) and at Literacy Council of Brown County Boys and Girls Club (2005-2007).

Sister Joyce retired to St. Louis in 2007. Since 2010, she served her community in prayer and presence at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis.

The funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 10 a.m. at the Nazareth Living Center Chapel, located at 2 Nazareth Lane, St. Louis, MO 63129. No visitors are allowed due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Mass will be available to view via live stream. Stay tuned for the link.
