Sister Charlotte Smith, CSJ 1924-2020

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Charlotte Smith who passed away on January 25, 2020 at NHC Healthcare and Rehab in North Augusta, South Carolina. She was 95 years of age.

Sister Charlotte Smith, baptized Dorothy, was born on July 11, 1924 in Augusta, Georgia to parents Charles Vernon and Edna Louise (Watkins) Smith. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 13, 1941, was received as Sister Mary Charlotte, and made her final profession on August 15, 1947.

Sister Charlotte served in education for 42 years before retiring. From 1944 to 1958, she taught grade school in the state of Georgia at St. Joseph Male Orphanage in Washington, Sacred Heart in Savannah, St. Joseph in Marietta, and St. Anthony in Atlanta. She transitioned to teaching on the high school level in 1960 at St. Joseph High School in Atlanta. She taught at St. Joseph Academy in Green Bay, Wisconsin, from 1968 to 1977 and returned to Georgia in 1977 to Aquinas High School in Augusta.

After 16 years of caring for family, Sister Charlotte officially retired in 2003. Since 2014, she resided in North Augusta, South Carolina, where she continued to carry out her ministry of prayer and witness.
