The motherhouse is an inspiring, ever-evolving sacred space connecting the past to what the CSJ mission can accomplish in the future.

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet have always responded to the needs of the times. This year's FUNdrive focuses on three projects that are critical to sisters doing more with their mission and meeting the needs of the world today. Learn more about the FUNdrive and how you can help the Sisters of St. Joseph continue to relieve the world's hunger for spirituality and community, and to provide service to the dear neighbor.

Meet Team Motherhouse

Vitalize Holy Ground

Team Captain: Sister Linda Markway

One week after the sisters arrived in September 1836, they opened a school in a humble log cabin where the motherhouse stands today. By 1837, the cabin was home to a school, an orphanage and St. Joseph School for the Deaf.

The motherhouse was built over a period of 60 years, weathering a catastrophic fire in 1858 that destroyed the log cabin and two buildings, while damaging two other buildings. Holy Family Chapel, built in 1899, was the final wing to be added. The motherhouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Buildings in 1980.

As our ministries’ grew, so did our motherhouse. A home for our sisters. A conference center for meetings, retreats and special events. Administrative offices for the province. A stabilizing center for the surrounding community. We want to keep this spiritual hub alive, thriving and able to meet the ministry needs of the future.

Donations to the team support:

  • Holy Family Chapel repairs
  • building upkeep and improvements
  • grounds improvements and beautification
  • a vital, engaging conference center
  • security for our sister residents
  • community revitalization

You can also choose to support one or more of the other two critical projects: Team Social Justice and Team Retirement.

Come together because together ... we are more.
