The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Louis province, joyfully affirmed new leadership at a blessing ceremony on June 29 at the province motherhouse in St. Louis. The team takes office on July 1 and will serve their term through June 30, 2023.

Sister Margaret Schulz, CSJ: Province Leader

“Tapping experienced persons to enhance our thinking and call us to action to personally carry out our directions might lead us to be the ‘more’ we are meant to be for the dear neighbor.”

For 48 years, Sister Margaret served in the ministry of education. A teacher and administrator in at schools in Missouri, Wisconsin, Texas and Illinois. Her most recent assignment was as an administrator at Peoria Notre Dame High School. In 2013, Sister Margaret was bestowed the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Award for her 25 years of service to the church in the Peoria diocese.

Sister Amy Hereford, CSJ: Province Leader

“I will bring the education and experience of consulting with religious communities as they engage in an uncertain and challenging future.”

Sister Amy is an attorney/canonist for her own Religious Law and Consultation service, providing consultation, educational seminars and articles on a variety of legal and canonical issues affecting religious institutes and nonprofit organizations. Her list of publications is extensive, including her acclaimed book, Religious Life at the Crossroads (Orbis Books 2013) that explores the movements in religious life today. She is passionate about Earth issues and lives out that call to sustainability by being a part of an urban eco-village.

Sister Fran Maher, CSJ: Province Leader

“Connectedness is my greatest strength, with relationships and people a top priority.”

For the first half of her professional career, Sister Fran served on the secondary level of education as a mathematics and theology teacher and in various administrative roles in numerous school around the country. While in Kansas City, she transitioned to higher education at Avila University, and was part of the team that started Avila Advantage, the evening program for working professionals. In St. Louis she worked at Fontbonne University, Harris-Stowe State University and, most recently at Webster University as an academic advisor.

Sister Jeanne Janssen, CSJ: Province Councilor

“I have a clarity of focus that enables me to see both the forest and the trees.”

Sister Jeanne has a vast background of international experience. Missioned to Japan, she taught at the high school and university levels as well as served as the superior for the CSJ’s vice province of Japan. Next missioned to the Philippines, Sister Jeanne lived and worked in the slums of Manila, and she taught in the rural areas of China. In the states, she was a director of mission education and magazine editor for the Missionary Society of St. Columban in Nebraska. Since 2012, Sister Jeanne has lived and worked in Kansas City and is currently a student success coach at Avila University working largely with students with academic or physical challenges.

Sister Maria Jeanne Tipton, CSJ, Province Councilor

“I think if we care for one another, are accountable to one another and learn to deal effectively with conflict from any direction, we will be an unstoppable community.”

With degrees in both chemistry and math, Sister Maria Jeanne taught at the secondary level at schools in St. Louis and Peoria. In the 1980s, while earning a certificate in data processing, she began a career working as a programmer/analyst.
