Sister Marie René, baptized Ruth, was born in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. She was received into the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1943. She received a bachelor’s degree in history from Loretto Heights College in Denver in 1952 and a master’s degree history from St. Louis University in 1959.

Sister Marie began teaching on the elementary level. She taught at Visitation Grade School in Kansas City, Missouri (1945-48,) and at St. Catherine of Siena Grade School in Denver, Colorado (1948-55).

Sister Marie taught high school at St. Joseph’s Academy in Green Bay, Wisconsin, from 1955 to 1957. She moved to St. Louis and taught the next two years at St. Margaret of Scotland Grade School. She returned to Colorado in 1959, teaching at St. Frances de Sales High School in Denver until 1961 and then serving as principal and teacher at St. Mary Grade School in Littleton for six years. In 1967, she returned to St. Joseph’s Academy in Green Bay to teach.

Two years later, in 1969, she was principal of St. Francis de Sales High School in Denver. Four years later, in 1973, three diocesan high schools were consolidated into one because of the decline in the number of students from their feeder schools. St. Francis de Sales High School was one of them. Sister Marie then moved to Augusta, Georgia, in 1973 and taught at Aquinas High School.

From 1977 to 1981, Sister Marie René served in the religious education program at St. Stephen’s Parish in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. In 1981, St. Stephen’s Catholic School was opened at the request of the parish families. Sister Marie René became the principal and teacher until 1993.

Sister Marie moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1993 to teach at Our Lady of Las Vegas Grade School until 1996. The following year she was a geriatric companion. From 1997 to 2009, Sister Marie was a substitute teacher for the Las Vegas Catholic School.

Since 2009, Sister Marie has resided in St. Louis and is carrying out her ministry of prayer and presence, first at Nazareth Living Center (NLC), and now Laclede Groves Senior Living, awaiting reconstruction of NLC.
