Our Beliefs

Spirituality

A mission of love, a vision of unity

At our beginning, the Sisters of St. Joseph were known as “the Congregation of the Great Love of God.” We believe this love is at the heart of Jesus’ teaching, as he notes the greatest of commandments to be: “love the Lord your God with all your heart” and “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:36-39).

The Sisters of St. Joseph have sought to make that love visible for more than 360 years, loving God and neighbor without distinction. This love implies a unity of all people and all of creation. Jesus’ great prayer for his followers “that they all may be one” (John 17:21) is the root of our work for loving unity.

This unity is expressed through a spirituality of relationship that is found in relationships with God, with one another, with neighbor and with creation. It is relationship that enlivens us to share our hearts with one another in community. It is relationship that impels us to reach out to others who are in need.

Community

Together we bring our mission of love to the world.

The Sisters of St. Joseph live in community, supportive of the commitment they have made to a life of prayer, gospel living, ministry and justice.

We share a common mission: Choosing to love all, to live a simple lifestyle, to be closer to God and to serve others out of love. Through our mutual life-long support, we grow toward deeper love and express that love by sharing who we are and all we have.

We love freely. We live simply. We listen attentively.

Each sister is a witness to the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience. Although it can be a challenge to live this countercultural lifestyle in today’s society, friendship, support and faith maintain our spirits as the joys of living in community.  As we grow strong together, we are able to turn beyond ourselves to serve a world in need.

Are you called to more deeply commit to give your life in service of others in the name of love? Learn more about becoming a Sister of St. Joseph and other ways to join.

Justice

Bringing loving unity to a divided world.

The Sisters of St. Joseph and Associates educate, advocate and take action to promote justice. Our work is rooted in the gospel call to social justice and the struggle to be prophetic signs of unity in our world.

Our goals are to

  • Achieve unity of neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God so that all may be one.

  • Work in a way that heals and reconciles, serves all persons without distinction.

  • Recognize and defend the human dignity of all persons.

  • Promote justice with a particular concern for the poor.

We believe that the mission of Jesus calls us to collaboration with others for justice. To effect systemic change, we widen our networks with others, including our associates and partners in ministry.

Responding to the Needs of the Times

Since our 17th century founding, the Sisters of St. Joseph have been called to respond to the needs of the times, a tradition that we embrace today. We serve individuals and speak out on the unjust systems that affect them. Some of the areas we address are:

  •  Immigration
  •  Prison Ministry
  • Socially Responsible Investing
  • Human Trafficking
  • Women’s Issues
  • Healthcare
  • LGBTQ Issues
  • Poverty
  • And More …

Our Concerns

These three concerns especially guide our justice work:

Everything is connected: Care for creation.

Connectedness and relationship is at the heart of who we are.

We believe that everything is interconnected and that creation is a sacred trust given to the whole earth community. Along with our associates and partners, we recognize that all aspects of justice and survival with all creation – nature, humanity and organizations – intertwine.

The Sisters of St. Joseph are committed to individually and communally recognizing how our decisions impact the Earth community by raising our awareness and changing behaviors, to act with urgency to protect her stability and integrity and to celebrate her beauty wherever we are.

Everyone is Included: Dismantling discrimination.

Foundational to the principles of Catholic social teaching is our belief in the sanctity of human life and the inherent dignity of the human person.

We are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers; we are one human family. We are in solidarity with one another. In our Catholic social teaching, that means “loving our neighbor without distinction” has global dimensions. In our circle, everyone is included.

Everyone is sacred: Promoting peace and non-violence.

Because we are all one, what hurts one of us hurts all of us.

The Sisters of St. Joseph work to further peace and seek the ways of non-violence by being women of relationship, respecting one another and recognizing the human dignity of all. We collaborate with others who are in pursuit of peace.

Together, we are the heart of justice.

The heart of our community is to bring about loving unity in our world. Our common heart calls us to take one more step. Together, we are the heart of justice. You can share the heart of a Sister of St. Joseph and take one step in your world to bring about unity where there is division.
