Sister Jean Magdalene, baptized Betty Jean, was born in Omaha, Neb. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1961 and was received into the novitiate in 1962 as Sister John Magdalene. She received a bachelor’s degree in speech correction from Fontbonne College in 1966.

Sister Jean taught at Fontbonne College in 1966-67. She was a speech therapist for numerous St. Louis schools in the late 1960s and early 1970s. She then served as secretary  at St. Louis Cathedral School, spent one year in Fairbanks, Alaska as the director of religious education for the diocese, and returned to Cathedral as speech therapist/secretary.

In the late 1970s, Sister served in pastoral ministry at St. Joseph Hospital in Kirkwood. She went on to become the director of volunteer services at Nazareth Living Center and then served as was the secretary at Inter-Community Consultants. 

Sister Jean served the CSJ congregation as secretary/treasurer’s assistant at the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Congregational Center in Frontenac from 1992-2003. 

Sister Jean retired in 2003 and is serving in volunteer ministry. She is active in the Outreach Committee in her parish, St. Gerard Majella in Kirkwood, Mo., and she enjoys creating cards for special occasions on the computer.
