Sister Ruth Margaret Raupp 1921-2018

April 4, 1921 – January 29, 2018

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Ruth Margaret Raupp, CSJ who passed away on January 29, 2018, at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis, Missouri. She was 96 years of age.

Sister Ruth Margaret, baptized Barbara Jane, was born on April 4, 1921, in Decatur, Illinois, to parents Carl and Ruth (Theiss) Raupp. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1946, and made her final profession on August 15, 1952. She received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Fontbonne College in 1943 and a master’s in philosophy from St. Louis University in 1955.

In 1949, Sister Ruth Margaret began teaching in St. Louis at All Saints Grade School (1949-1951) and at St. Anthony of Padua Grade School (1951-1953). While working on her master’s degree, she taught at St. Patrick Grade School in St. Joseph, Missouri, and at St. Roch Grade School in St. Louis.  Upon earning her master’s she began teaching on the secondary level.  Sister Ruth Margaret taught at Redemptorist High School in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1955.  Moving to Peoria, Illinois, in 1956, she taught the next eight years at Academy of Our Lady.

Returning to St. Louis, Sister Ruth Margaret was an administrative staff member at Fontbonne College from 1964 to 1971. For the next 13 years, she served her CSJ community at the St. Joseph Provincialate as regional superior until 1977 and then as assistant province superior until 1984.  After her sabbatical, Sister Ruth Margaret transitioned into serving as a spiritual director, which she continued as she took on other roles.

In 1987, she served one year as the assistant administrator for the St. Joseph Provincial House before serving the next three years as co-administrator.  From 1991 to 1997, Sister Ruth served as the vice provincial superior in Honolulu, Hawaii. 

In 1997, she returned to the St. Joseph Provincial House in St. Louis as the hospitality coordinator.  Retiring in 2002, she volunteered at both the Carondelet Family Literacy Program until 2008 and at the St. Joseph Provincial House as a hospitality liaison until 2011. Since then, Sister Ruth Margaret had ministered in prayer and presence at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis.

Funeral arrangements will be on Thursday, February 1, with the visitation at 8:30 a.m. followed by the funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Motherhouse, 6400 Minnesota Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63111.
