Sister Rose Seyfried

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Rose de Lima Seyfried who passed away on Dec. 20 at Nazareth Living Center St. Louis, Mo. She was 90 years of age.

Sister Rose was born on January 1, 1924, to parents Philip D. and Rosa (Wernsing) Seyfried in Indianapolis, Indiana. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet on September 15, 1942, and professed her final vows on August 15, 1948. S. Rose received her bachelor’s degree in education from Loretto Heights College in Denver, Colorado.

During her 72 years as a Sister of St. Joseph, S. Rose devoted her life to education and pastoral ministry. In 1945, for a few months, she began working in child care at the old St. Joseph's Home for Boys in St. Louis. Afterwards, she went on to serve her first of 31 years in education.

S. Rose taught at the following grade schools: St. Teresa of Avila, St. Louis (1945); St. Patrick Grade, Denver (1949); Sacred Heart (1959) and St. Roch (1962-1963, 1968-1972), both in Indianapolis; Immaculate Conception, Montgomery City, Missouri (1963-1965); St. Francis Xavier, Bruswick, Georgia (1965-1968); and St. John the Evangelist, Valdosta, Georgia (1972-1976).

After retiring from teaching, S. Rose served in pastoral ministry for the next 27 years. In 1976 she was a pastoral minister at St. Joseph Church in Waycross, Georgia, and then at St. Joseph's Church in Jesup, Georgia in 1977.  She served as a parish worker at Our Lady Queen of Mercy Church in 1980 in Montgomery, Alabama.  

In 1984, she started her 21 years of service at Sacred Heart Parish in Crystal City/Festus where she worked as the religious education coordinator, pastoral minister (1987-2003) and pastoral associate (2003-2005).  She retired to Sacred Heart Convent in 2005.  S. Rose then moved to Nazareth Living Center in 2007 and served in a ministry of prayer and witness.

Funeral arrangements are planned for Tuesday, Dec. 23 at Nazareth Living Center Chapel, 2 Nazareth Lane, St. Louis, MO. A wake will be at 1 p.m., followed by Mass of the Resurrection at 2 p.m. Interment is at Resurrection Cemetery.
