Sister Rita Schmitz Honored by Fontbonne University

goldenschmitzOn May 2, Sister Rita Marie Schmitz, CSJ, a professor of education at Fontbonne University, was bestowed the university’s 2013 Fontbonne-Carondelet Heritage Award by President Dr. Dennis Golden in a special celebration at the Old Warson Country Club in Ladue, Mo. In addition, the Sister Rita Marie Schmitz, CSJ Endowed Scholarship Fund is being established in recognition of this honor.

The award recognizes a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet who exemplifies the heritage of the CSJs and the values of Fontbonne, and expresses Rita Schmitz Receives Fontbonne Awardgratitude for their long tradition of service and leadership. S. Rita is the fourth recipient of this award; before her were Sisters Stephanie Stueber, Mary Carol Anth and Jane Hassett.

“Receiving this prestigious Fontbonne-Carondelet Heritage Award is such an honor and is so humbling, says S. Rita. “What thrills me most is having an endowed scholarship in my name.  Everyone’s love and support is awesome.”

A 1966 Fontbonne graduate herself, S. Rita manifests the values that characterize the heart and soul of a Fontbonne education through her academic excellence and dedication to the university.

S. Rita began her academic career at the university in 1968 and has since been influencing students entering the teaching profession. As a professor in the Department of Education/Special Education, she enjoys working with undergraduate students in their entry-level courses so to foster their interest in teaching. She also mentors those entering student teaching.

ritaschmitzS. Rita is a member of several committees and boards and has received many other honors as well, including the Fontbonne University Alumni Award for Service, the Joan Goostree Stevens Excellence in Teaching Award and a Fontbonne University Founders Award.
