Sister Rita Flaherty CSJ 1919-2017

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Rita Flaherty, who passed away on July 19, 2017 at St. Clare Hospital in Fenton, Missouri. She was 97 years of age.

Sister Rita was born on December 23, 1919, in Kansas City, Missouri, to parents Edward and Mary E. (Best) Flaherty.  She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 12, 1938, was received on March 19, 1939 as Sister Marie Edouarda and made her final profession on August 15, 1944.

She received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Fontbonne College in 1946 and a master’s in mathematics from St. Louis University in 1951.

Sister Rita Flaherty served as a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 78 years.  She began teaching on the elementary level in St. Louis in 1941.  She taught kindergarten at Holy Rosary Grade School until 1945.  The following year she taught primary at St. Leo Grade School.  From 1946 to 1951, she taught at the St. Louis Cathedral Grade School. 

In 1951, Sister Rita taught one year at St. James Grade School in Denver, Colorado and concluded teaching on the elementary level at Our Lady of Lourdes Grade school in Raytown, Missouri, in 1953.

Sister Rita transitioned to secondary education in 1953 teaching mathematics. She taught at St. Francis de Sales High School in Denver from 1953 to 1956; Redemptorist High School in Kansas City from 1956 to 1962; Reicher High School in Waco, Texas from 1962 to 1963 and at Rosati-Kain High School in St. Louis from 1963 to 1968. Sister Rita spent the next 18 years teaching mathematics at Avila College/University in Kansas City. 

In 1986, Sister Rita served at St. Joseph Hospital in Kansas City where she worked in medical records and as the receptionist for the business office. She remained there for the following seven years.

Moving back to St. Louis in 1994, Sister Rita served her CSJ community for 10 years as a hospitality coordinator for Nazareth Living Center.

Sister Rita retired in 2004. Since 2006, Sister Rita had been living at Nazareth Living Center, carrying out her ministry of prayer and presence

A Memorial Mass will be held July 25 at 10 a.m. at Nazareth Living Center, 2 Nazareth Lane, St. Louis, MO 63129.  Sister Rita’s cremains will be buried at Resurrection Cemetery.
