Sister Mary Laurent Duggan 1919-2013

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Mary Laurent Duggan who passed away on July 21 of pneumonia at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis, Mo. She was 94 years old.

Sister Mary Laurent was born on May 13, 1919, to parents Lawrence A. and Mae (Lawler) in St. Louis. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet on September 15, 1941, and made her final profession on August 15, 1947. She received a bachelor's degrees in Latin (1941) and applied music (1950) from Fontbonne College; a master's in musciology from the University of Illinois—Champaign in 1956 and a doctorate in musicology from Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY in 1968.

Sister served more than 30 years as a music teacher. She began teaching in 1944 at All Saints Grade School in St. Louis and then St. Teresa's Academy in Kansas City, Mo. For the next 13 years she taught at St. Joseph's Academy in Green Bay, Wis. In 1958, Sister Mary Laurent returned to St. Louis and continued secondary music education at Rosati- Kain High School and then at St. Joseph's Academy in 1960 .

In 1961, Sister Mary Laurent began teaching music on the college level. She served for three years at the College of St. Teresa (now Avila University) as a music instructor.  Upon completion of her doctorate, she returned to Kansas City in 1965 to teach at the newly renamed Avila College until 1967. From 1967 to 1971, she was a faculty music teacher at Fontbonne College.

Sister left teaching for the next six years to serve her CSJ community as the Provincial Superior.  At the end of her term, in 1977, Sister Mary Laurent returned to teaching music at St. Anthony High School in St. Louis.

From 1978 to 1988, Sister Mary Laurent served as chancery administrator for the Chancery Office of the Catholic Diocese of Savannah, Ga.

Returning to St. Louis in 1988, Sister became the associate director for the Development Office of the St. Louis Province and in 1993 continued in that office as an office worker until her retirement in 2008.

Since then, she lived a ministry of prayer and witness at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis.

In 2012, Sister Mary Laurent celebrated her 75th Jubilee as a Sister of St. Joseph. She had also been awarded the Distinguished Alumna Award for St. Joseph's Academy, St. Louis that same year.

A Mass of the Resurrection was held  July 23 at Nazareth Living Center Chapel. She is  buried at Resurrection Cemetery.
