Sister Mary Brigid Massey 1930-2013

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Mary Brigid Massey who passed away on Nov. 28 at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis, Mo. She was 83 years old.

Sister Mary Brigid was born on August 8, 1930, in Searcy, Ark., to parents Claud and Nola Mae (Wilkerson) Massey.  She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet on September 15, 1950, and made her final profession on August 15, 1958. She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the College of St. Teresa College, (now Avila University) in 1961.

Sister Mary Brigid began her 62 years of service in education. In 1953, she was a primary teacher at Nativity of Our Lord Grade School in Chicago, Ill. She moved to Kansas City, Mo., in 1954 to teach at Visitation Grade School. In 1961 she taught junior high at St. Mary Cathedra Grade School in Peoria, Ill., and in 1967 she served in pastoral ministry for the St. Mary Cathedral parish.

She returned to Chicago a year later and taught at the intermediate level at Nativity of Our Lord Grade School. She continued at that level in 1970 at St. Matthew the Apostle Grade School; in 1971 at Our Lady of the Americas Grade School in Kansas City, Mo.; and in 1975 at Holy Cross Grade School in Champaign, Ill.

S. Mary Brigid came back to St. Louis after three years and worked in community service at Nazareth Convent (now known as Nazareth Living Center). She moved on to become the retirement community co-director for Frontenac Community in 1981 before returning to Nazareth Convent as superior for four years beginning in 1984. She also worked as a counselor at Consumer Credit Counseling Service from 1988-1989.

S. Mary Brigid then took her last teaching position as an intermediate teacher at Incarnate Word Grade School, which she held for 10 years. In 1999 she served her CSJ community in the Office of Aging/Senior Ministry Office as a driver and staff support. Thirteen years later, Sister Mary Brigid served in volunteer ministry before retiring in 2013.

 A Memorial Mass scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Dec. 12 at Nazareth Living Center Chapel, 2 Nazareth Lane, St. Louis, MO 63129.  Sister Mary Brigid was cremated; her cremains will be buried at Resurrection Cemetery in St. Louis.
