Sister Mary Antonia Palumbo


October 27, 1914 - August 3, 2013

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Mary Antonia Palumbo who passed away on Aug. 3 of urosepsis at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis, Mo. She was 98 years old.

Sister Mary Antonia was born on October 27, 1914, to parents Domenico and Maria (Rocchio) Palumbo in St. Louis. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet on September 8, 1933, and made her final profession on August 15, 1939. She received a bachelor's degree in history from Fontbonne College in 1948.

For 60 of her 79 years as a Sister of St. Joseph, Sister Palumbo served in education. She began teaching in 1936 at St. Mary Magdalen Grade School in St. Louis. In 1942, S. Mary Antonia went on to Little Flower Grade School in Mobile, Ala., for 12 years before returning to St. Louis in 1954 to teach at Our Lady of Lourdes Grade School.

Six years later, in 1960, S. Mary Antonia served as both principal and teacher at St. Cecilia Grade School in Peoria, Ill. for one year. She then came back to St. Louis to serve as principal and teacher at St. Philip Neri Grade School.

Sister Mary Antonia left once more in 1967 to teach the junior high at Our Lady of the Americas Grade School in Kansas City, Mo. After 11 years, she returned to St. Louis to be a teacher and tutor at Our Lady of Lourdes, where she remained until her retirement in 1996. She then lived a ministry of prayer and witness at Nazareth Living Center.

A Mass of the Resurrection was held Aug. 6 at the Nazareth Living Center Chapel. S. Mary Antonia is buried at Resurrection Cemetery.
