Sister Mary Ann Lavin, CSJ 1932-2017

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Mary Ann Lavin who passed away on June 19, 2017, at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis, Missouri. She was 85 years of age. 

Sister Mary Ann Lavin was born on January 21, 1932, in Kansas City, Missouri, to parents Harold Paul and Sarah Evelyn (Yates) Lavin. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1949, and made her final profession on August 15, 1957.

Sister Mary Ann served over 50 years in education. She began on the elementary level in St. Louis in 1952. She taught at the Nativity of Our Lord Grade School for 10 years. In 1962, she served three years teaching at St. Mary Grade School in Bridgeton, Missouri. Sister Mary Ann transitioned to teaching at the high school level in 1965 at Reicher Catholic High School in Waco, Texas. 

Five years later, Sister Mary Ann served at St. Teresa’s Academy in Kansas City, where she remained for the next 33 years. She taught young art and religion for 30 years and then served as a volunteer for the last three years. In 2003, Sister Mary Ann was a driver for CSJ Home Care of Kansas City. Since 2004, she had been living at Nazareth Living Center carrying out her ministry of prayer and presence.

The funeral will be June 22 with the viewing at 9 a.m. and Mass of the Resurrection at 10 a.m. at Nazareth Living Center, 2 Nazareth Lane, St. Louis, MO 63129.

When she entered the community in the fall of 1949, she began her college work with a special interest in art and art education.  She received her BA in Art from Fontbonne in the spring of 1965.
