Sister Martha Ritter CSJ 1922-2017

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Martha Ritter who passed away on Jan. 22 at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis, Missouri. She was 94 years of age.
Sister Martha Ritter was born on September 14, 1922, in St. Louis, Missouri, to parents Joseph and Louise (Meyer) Ritter. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1940, and made her final profession on August 15, 1946.
She earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Fontbonne College in 1958
Sister Martha served in elementary education for her first 29 years of ministry. She began teaching at St. Vincent de Paul in St. Louis in 1943.
From 1946 to 1956, she taught at St. Cecilia in Peoria, Illinois. For next five years she taught at St. Joseph in Hancock, Michigan. She then taught at Holy Name in St. Louis and at St. Anthony in Atlanta.
Sister Martha returned to St. Louis in 1965 and taught All Saints, becoming principal there in 1971. Remaining in the All Saints Parish, she served as the parish work coordinator through 1978.
In 1979, she began 13 years of service at St. Thomas Aquinas, first as the resource center coordinator then as the alumnae coordinator after St. Thomas Aquinas and Mercy High Schools merged.
Beginning 1992 Sister Martha served her Sisters of St. Joseph community at the St. Joseph Provincial House for five years, first as a switchboard operator and typist and then as the secretary for the Province House Administration.
Since 1998, Sister Martha lived at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis, carrying on her ministry of prayer and presence.
The funeral Mass will be held Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. at Nazareth Living Center, with viewing at 9 a.m.
