Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Maria Joseph Walsh who passed away on June 26 of pneumonia at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis. She was 79 years old.

S. Maria Joseph Walsh was born on March 19, 1933, in Atchison, Kan., to George and Theresa (Degan) Walsh. On Sept. 15 1956, S. Maria entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. She made her final vows on Aug. 6, 1964. S. Maria Joseph received a bachelor’s degree in English/education from Mt. St. Scholastica College in Atchison in 1955 and a master's in English from St. Louis University in 1966.

S. Maria began her years of service as a primary teacher at St. Agnes Grade School in St. Louis in 1959. She moved on to secondary education and taught at Reicher Catholic High School in Waco, TX (1960-1961); Rosati-Kain High School in St. Louis (1961-1965); and Little Flower High School in Chicago, Ill., (1965-1969). She then served as assistant principal and teacher at Valle High School in Ste. Genevieve, Mo., (1970-1972) and at St. Teresa’s Academy, Kansas City, Mo., (1972-1982).

In 1982, S. Maria became the spiritual development coordinator for the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph in Kansas City. She remained there until 1987 when she pursued graduate work first at St. Louis University (1987) and then at the Franciscan University of Steubenville in Steubenville, OH in (1988). She began teaching at the Franciscan University in 1990. Then, in 1997, she was named the director of the Annunciation House, a sabbatical house for sisters in Steubenville.

S. Maria retired in 2007 and moved to Nazareth Living Center to minister in prayer and witness.

Funeral arrangements are planned for Friday, June 26 at the Nazareth Living Center Chapel, 2 Nazareth Lane, St. Louis, MO 63129. The wake is at 9:00 a.m. followed by the funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery.
