Sister Margaret Mary Gregg, CSJ 1940-2015

May 29, 1940 - December 19, 2015

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Margaret Gregg, CSJ who passed away on Dec. 19 at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis. She was 75 years of age.

Sister Margaret was born on May 29, 1940, in St. Louis, Missouri, to parents Ralph and Philomena (Aliperti) Gregg. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15 , 1958, was received as Sister Margaret James, and made her final profession on August 6, 1966.

She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Fontbonne College in St. Louis in 1963 and a master's degree in special education from Ball State University in 1973.

Sister Margaret began teaching in 1963 at St. Peter Grade School in Marquette, Michigan. In St. Louis, she taught at Holy Guardian Angels Grade in 1967 and at Nativity of Our Lord Grade School in 1968.

From 1973-77, Sister Margaret was the principal and director of education for the Village of St. Joseph in Atlanta, Georgia.

Back to St. Louis, she brought her educational experience and expertise to Jesuit Living and Learning Program as a teacher (1977-79), national coordinator (1979-80) and as the national field director (1980-84).

After a sabbatical at Weston School of Theology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Sister Margaret was executive director for the St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf when it was located in University City, Missouri. She followed as principal from 1989-92 at St. Joseph's Home for Boys in St. Louis.

For the next two decades, Sister Margaret served the dear neighbor in San Jose, California. From 1992-2000, she was the president/executive director at Concern for the Poor, Inc. From 2000 to 2008, she was he homeless service coordinator for Santa Clara County. Then, through 2012, she was the coordinator of church relations at Family Support Housing. 

Sister Margaret returned to St. Louis and served her CSJ community as the community life bookkeeper at Nazareth Living Center.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 22 at Mary Mother of the Church, 5901 Kerth Road, St. Louis, MO 63128.  The wake will be at 9 a.m. with Mass of the Resurrection to follow at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery.
