Sister Margaret Catherine Merrell 1917-2013

January 16, 1917 - September 29, 2013

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Margaret Catherine Merrell who passed away on September 29, 2013 of a cerebral vascular accident at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis. She was 96 years old.

Sister Margaret was born on January 15, 1917 in St. Louis, Mo. to William and Alice (O’Brien) Merrell.  She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet on September 15, 1935 and made her final profession on August 15, 1941 as Sister Mary William.  She received a bachelor’s degree in English from Fontbonne College in 1950 and a master’s degree in English from St. Louis University in 1962.

Sister Margaret served nearly 61 of her 78 years as a CSJ in education.  She began as an elementary teacher in 1938 at St. Columbkille Grade School, St. Louis; at St. Peter Grade School, Marquette, Mich. in 1941; St. Gregory Grade School, St. Ann, Mo. in 1950 and St. Leo Grade School, St. Louis in 1952. She served as principal and teacher at the American Martyrs Grade School in Kingsford, Mich. from 1954-57.

Returning to St. Louis in 1957, she taught at St. Louis Cathedral Grade School.  Sister Margaret then began 25 years of service of teaching at the high school level.  She was a Latin and English teacher at Valle High school in Ste. Genevieve for 11 years and then taught religion and English at St. Anthony High School in St. Louis until 1984.

She took a two-year leave for family care and returned to teaching on the elementary level in 1986 at Our Lady of the Presentation Grade School where she also undertook clerical work.  Beginning in 1993, Sister Margaret volunteered her educational talents and served as the resource room coordinator at Corpus Christ District school in St. Louis. 

In 1999 Sister Margaret retired and since 2002, she ministered in prayer and witness at Nazareth Living Center.

Funeral arrangements are planned for Wednesday, October 3, 2013.  Viewing will begin at 8:00 a.m. with  Mass to follow  at 9:00 a.m. at the Nazareth Living Center Chapel, 2 Nazareth Lane, St. Louis, MO 63129.  Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
