Sister John Mandeville, CSJ 1932-2018

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister John Mandeville, CSJ who passed away on August 24, 2018, at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis, Missouri. She was 85 years of age.

Sister John Mandeville, baptized Gertrude Irene, was born on October 26, 1932, in Jacksonville, Illinois, to parents John and Gertrude (Kumle) Mandeville. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1949, and made her final profession on August 15, 1957. She received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Fontbonne College in 1963 and a master’s degree in elementary education administration from St. Louis University in 1970.

Sister John Mandeville began her 68 years of ministry as a Sister of St. Joseph teaching grade school at Holy Guardian Angels in St. Louis from 1952 to 1954. She continued her 40 years in elementary education at Little Flower Grade School in Mobile, Alabama (1954-1961).  Returning to St. Louis, she taught at Nativity of Our Lord Grade School (1961-1964) and at St. Agnes Grade School (1964-1970) where she also served as principal.  In 1970, she transitioned to the position of full-time principal and served at Ste. Genevieve/Valle Grade School in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, until 1980.  During her last 12 years in education, Sister John served as principal at St. Margaret of Scotland Grade School in St. Louis.

After a brief sabbatical, S. John served the next 10 years at St. Paul Parish in St. Paul, Missouri, as a pastoral minister.

From 2013 to 2016, she served her CSJ community as a volunteer at Nazareth Living Center.

Since 2016, Sister John had been living at Nazareth Living Center carrying out her ministry of prayer and presence

The funeral Mass will be held, Aug. 29 at 11 a.m. at St. Margaret of Scotland, 3854 Flad Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63110.  Viewing will be held at 10 a.m.
