Sister Helen Miljour 1930-2016

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Helen Miljour who passed away on August 14 at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis, Missouri. She was 86  years of age.

Sister Helen was born on January 17, 1930, in Perkins, Michigan, to parents George and Alvina (Everard) Miljour. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1948, and made her final profession on August 15, 1956.

She received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Fontbonne College in St. Louis in 1961; a master’s degree in physics from the University of Wisconsin in Superior, Wisconsin in 1970 and a specialist in science education from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Colorado in 1973.

Sister Helen served as a teacher in her first 21 years of ministry. In St. Louis she taught on the primary level at Most Holy Rosary Grade School (1951-1953) and at St. Luke the Evangelist Grade School (1953-1961).  In 1961 she began teaching secondary education.  Sister Helen was the head of the math department/teacher at Most Blessed Sacrament in St. Louis (1961-62) and finished teaching in St. Louis at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Florissant (1962-1963).

The next six years, Sister Helen taught at St. Francis de Sales High school in Denver, Colorado. In 1969 she attended Wisconsin State University in Superior and taught the last leg of secondary education at St Joseph High School in Atlanta, Georgia, where she taught physics, advanced algebra and advanced geometry.

Sister Helen was a student in 1972 at the University of Colorado in Boulder. For the next three years she taught at Avila College.  But also at this time, Sister Helen began a 35-year ministry of spiritual work.  

In the 1970s through the 1980s, Sister Helen served at many locations. At St. Elizabeth House of Prayer in Kansas City, she was a staff member and then director. She was the assistant administrator at St. Joseph Convent in Marquette, Michigan.  

In Ishpeming, Michigan, she was the retreat director at Tri-Parish Center and a staff member at the Shantivanum House of Prayer in Easton, Kansas.  In 1982 she studied at Holy Names Center in Spokane, Washington. Sister Helen served as the campus minister at Catholic Student Center - Northern Michigan University in Marquette. Returning to Missouri in 1987, Sister Helen was a staff member at the Sisters of St. Francis in Independence.

From 1991 until her retirement in 2008, Sister Helen served in Kansas City. She offered her expertise in spiritual direction and massage therapy not only at Foyle Hall on Avila's campus but in private sessions and at Emmaus Community.  She was also the director of the Massage Therapy Training Institute from 1994-1996.

Since 2008 she served in the ministry of prayer and presence at Nazareth Living Center.

A Funeral Mass will be held the Nazareth Living Center Chapel on Thursday, August 18 at 10:00 a.m. Viewing will be at 9:00 a.m.
