Sister Frances Virginia Cholet, CSJ 1927-2015


August 29, 1927 - July 30, 2015

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Frances Virginia Cholet who passed away on July 30 at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis, Missouri. She was  87 years of age.

Sister Frances Virginia was born on August 29, 1927, in Jefferson City, Missouri, to parents Harold Francis and Virginia (Hennessy) Cholet. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1945, and made her final profession on August 15, 1951.

She received her bachelor’s degree in French from Fontbonne College in St. Louis in 1956 and a master’s in French from Western Reserve University, Cleveland in 1966.

Sister Frances Virginia began 69 years of service as a teacher.  She taught at the end of the 1948 school year at St. Anthony of Pauda Grade School in St. Louis before moving to Chicago, Illinois to teach at St. Viator Grade School. In 1950 she taught at Holy Guardian Angels Grade School (1950-57) in St. Louis and then at St. Joseph Grade School (1957-61) in West de Pere, Wisconsin.

She returned to St. Louis in 1961 and served at Our Lady of Lourdes Grade School first as a teacher. She  took on the additional role as principal in 1964 until 1969.

For nearly 20 years she served her CSJ community at the St. Joseph Provincial House as the director of personnel  (1976), assistant provincial superior (1977-84) and provincial superior (1984-88).

Sister Frances Virginia served the next 12 years as the vice-president of mission effectiveness at Carondelet Health System.  In 2000 she served in CSJ Care by caring for the elderly in their homes until 2009 when she entered into volunteer ministry.

Since 2011 she served in the ministry of prayer and presence at Nazareth Living Center.

A Mass of the Resurrection was held Aug. 4 at Nazareth Living Center. She is buried at Resurrection Cemetery.
