Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Elizabeth (Betty) Ney (S. Peter Marie) who departed this life on Wednesday, September 8 at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis. She died of brain cancer. 

Born in St. Louis, S. Betty was received into the novitiate in 1961 and made her final profession in 1969. 

S. Betty received her bachelor's degree in education from Fontbonne College in St. Louis in 1966. She then received her master's in social work from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Champaign, Ill. in 1977.

She began her years of service as a teacher from 1966-1970 at Visitation School in Kansas City, Mo.; Village of St. Joseph in Atlanta, Ga.; Ste. Genevieve duBois Grade School in St. Louis and Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Kansas City. 

While receiving her master's, she began one of her many years of service in the Augusta, Ga. area at St. Joseph Hospital - Center for Life as a social worker in 1976. In 1977 she was director of agency on aging at Central Savannah River Area of Planning & Development in Savannah. She went on to serve as program coordinator/director at the Mid-East Area Agency on Aging in St. Louis (1979-1981) and then at the Missouri Division of Aging in Jefferson City (1981-1983). 

For a few months in 1984, S. Betty was a consultant for the Catholic Health Association in St. Louis before returning to St. Joseph Hospital - Center for Life where she served as administrative assistant and Urgent Care President/COO from 1984-1986. 

Kansas City, Mo. became her home for the next eight years. She was consultant and coordinator on aging services at the St. Joseph Health Center (1986-1987) and administrator pro tem at Carondelet Manor (1987) and then consultant/vice president at Carondelet Health Corporation until 1994. 

S. Betty fled the Midwest for a few years for the West Coast where she was on sabbatical for a year at the School of Applied Theology in Oakland, Calif. From 1995-1997 she was the center manager for ONLOK Senior Health Services in San Francisco. 

In 1997, she came back to the Kansas City area to serve as executive director at Northland Health Care Access. From 1998-2001 she ministered at DePaul Community Health Center in Bridgeton, Mo. as director of aging services. 

Following her return to the Missouri, S. Betty traveled south again to Augusta and the St. Joseph Hospital - Center for Life where she was director and then vice president of mission integration from 2001-2005. Afterwards, she stayed in the area to serve as executive director at St. Joseph Foundation/Hospice. Then in 2006 she became the sponsor liaison for CSJ Health Ministry - Ascension Health. 

In 2008, S. Betty was elected to the Congregational Leadership Team for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and relocated to St. Louis to serve at the Congregational Center on Frontenac. She then retired to Nazareth Living Center in August 2010. 

Services will be held Friday, September 10 at the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Motherhouse in Holy Family Chapel, 6400 Minnesota Ave., St. Louis, MO 63111. The visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. with a wake service and memory sharing beginning at 6:45 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection will be at 7 p.m. followed by a reception. A private burial will be held on Saturday, September 11 at Resurrection Cemetery.
