Sister Clairerita Atha, CSJ 1932-2017

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Clairerita Atha who passed away on March 28 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. She was 84 years of age.

Sister Clairerita Atha was born on November 16, 1932, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to parents Allen Vestal and Margaret (Kinnen) Atha. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1954, was received as Sister Alan Margaret and made her final profession on August 6, 1962.

Sister Clairerita began her ministry work by teaching briefly at St. Elizabeth Grade School in Kansas City in 1954. She followed the call to nursing that same year and began education at the College of St. Teresa (now Avila University) until 1957. She continued her nursing education at St. Joseph Hospital in Kansas City the following year.

In 1959, she was the nursing supervisor of the west wing at St. Joseph Hospital in Kansas City. Two years later, Sister Clairerita was the nursing supervisor on the night shift at St. Joseph Hospital in Kirkwood, Missouri, until 1967. She then moved to Hancock, Michigan, to serve as the assistant head nurse at St. Joseph Community Hospital for one year. In 1968, she went on to serve as the nursing supervisor at St. Mary Hospital in Amsterdam, New York.

Returning to Missouri in 1970, she served as a nurse for three years at St. Joseph Hospital in Kansas City, and then two years at St. Joseph Hospital in Kirkwood. She returned to Kansas City in 1975 to nurse at the new St. Joseph Medical Center. In 1981, Sister Clairerita began her 11 years of nursing at Heartland Hospital East St. Joseph, in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Sister Clairerita came back to St. Louis in 1992, where she served at Nazareth Living Center as a nurse for two years and then as a cook for eight. In 2002, she continued to live out the CSJ charism of serving the dear neighbor through her work as a home service caregiver for CSJ Care. Sister Clairerita then retired in 2007. Since 2011, Sister Clairerita had been living at Nazareth Living Center carrying out her ministry of prayer and presence.

The funeral Mass was be held March 29 at Nazareth Living Center, 2 Nazareth Lane, St. Louis, MO 63129.
