Sister Cecilia Sullivan

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Cecilia Sullivan (S. Regina Margaret) who passed away on April 9 at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis, Missouri. She was 90 years of age.

S. Cecilia was born to parents John Francis and Sarah Emily (Carroll) Sullivan on October 19, 1924 in Kansas City, Missouri. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet on February 11, 1943 and made her final profession on August 15, 1948. She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Fontbonne College in St. Louis in 1954.

Beginning in 1945, S. Cecilia served in education for 34 years. She taught at various grade schools in Colorado, Missouri, Michigan, Illinois, Texas and Georgia:

  • Our Lady of the Presentation Grade School, St. Louis, MO (1948)
  • Sts. John & James Grade School, Ferguson, Mo (1953)
  • Sacred Heart Grade School, L’Anse, MI (1956)
  • Immaculate Conception Grade School, St. Joseph, MO (1959)
  • St. Bede the Venerable Grade School, Chicago, IL (1961)
  • Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Kansas City, MO (1962)
  • Our Lady of Perpetual Help Grade School, Kansas City, MO (1963)
  • St. Louis Grade School, Waco, TX (1972)
  • St. John the Evangelist Grade School, Valdosta, GA (1977)

Then, in 1979, she left the classroom to work in pastoral ministry. S. Cecilia worked for a year as a pastoral minister at St. Joseph’s Parish in Jesup, Georgia. She returned to Texas in 1980 and was the program director at St. Rose of Lima Parish in Houston and then a pastoral associate at St. Monica Parish in Cameron in 1986.

Four years later, S. Cecilia returned to St. Louis. She worked as the parish receptionist at St. Luke the Evangelist Parish until 1993 when she became a tutor for the parish grade school. She remained there until retiring to Nazareth Living Center in 2000, where she served in prayer and witness.

S. Cecilia donated her body to science. A Memorial Mass is planned for Monday, April 27 at 10 a.m. at Nazareth Living Center, 2 Nazareth Lane, St. Louis, MO 63129.
