Sister Catherine Ann Gleason CSJ 1924-2017

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Catherine Ann Gleason, who passed away on June 23, 2017, at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis, Missouri. She was 93 years of age.

Sister Catherine Ann was born on February 15, 1924, in Ishpeming, Michigan, to parents John F. and Anna E. (Thornton) Gleason.  She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1942, was received as Sister Mary Hanora, and made her final profession on August 15, 1948.

She received a bachelor’s degree in history from Fontbonne College in St. Louis, in 1957 and a master’s in elementary education administration from St. Xavier College, Chicago, Illinois, in 1968.

Sister Catherine Ann served 39 years in elementary education. She began teaching in St. Louis in 1945 at Notre Dame de Lourdes and Most Holy Rosary grade schools. In 1948 she began nine years of teaching in Houston, Texas at St. Rose of Lima Grade School.  From 1957 to 1960 she taught in Champaign, Illinois, at Holy Cross Grade School.

For the next nine years, Sister Catherine Ann served in Michigan.  She was principal as well as taught at the following schools:  American Martyrs in Kingsford from 1960 to 1966; at St. Peter in Marquette from 1966 to 1969 and at Sacred Heart in L’Anse from 1969 to 1970. Returning to St. Louis, she was principal and teacher at St. Blaise Grade School for two years and then taught three years at St. Gregory.  In 1975, she served one year as principal at St. Joseph Grade School in West De Pere, Wisconsin. 

Sister Catherine served her remaining eight years of elementary education at St. Viator Grade School in Chicago, Illinois.  She taught from 1976 to 1978 and then served as principal until 1984.

In 1985, Sister Catherine served for 15 years in parish ministry in Michigan.  At St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette, she handled the Renew Resource and youth ministry programs. Three years later, she was the director of religious education and pastoral services at the Tri-Parish from 1988 to 1998 and then at the Religious Education Center in 1999

Sister Catherine Ann retired in 1999 to Ishpeming.  Since 2012 she resided at Nazareth Living Center, carrying out her ministry of prayer and presence.

The funeral Mass will be held June 28 with viewing at 9 a.m. and Mass of the Resurrection at 10 a.m. at Nazareth Living Center, 2 Nazareth Lane, St. Louis, MO 63129.
