CHICAGO: After working for 50 years, most people look forward to retiring. But not Sister Bernadette Eaton.

After her 55 years of service at St. Joseph’s Carondelet Child Center, the center closed on September 30, 2005. She was devastated. Being 76 years old at the time and in good health, she felt like she needed a job.

Less than two weeks later, the Spirit answered, and she was employed by Catholic Charities, Chicago, where today, at 86, she works as the project coordinator to the Office of the President.

Catholic Charities recently presented her a 10-year Employee Service Award. “I can't believe that it has been 10 years. It's a joy going to work every day,” she says.

For Sister Bernadette, putting God and gratitude first keeps her going. She starts every day with Mass at Mercy Hospital where she "cherishes the privilege" of being the sacristan.

“I thank God often for my many blessings--good health and good people," she says. "And knowing that I have the love and support of all the Sister of St. Joseph and Associates as well as my family and friends.”
