Sister Anne Carlos Souto

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Anne Carlos Souto who passed away on Feb. 18 at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis, Missouri. She was 87 years of age.

Sister Anne was born on May 17, 1927, to parents Manuel Gonzales and Viola (Fullerton) Souto in Mobile, Alabama. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet on September 15, 1947, and professed her final vows on August 15, 1953. S. Anne received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Fontbonne College in 1956 and a master's in special education from the University of South Alabama in 1978.

S. Anne ministered in education for nearly all of her 66 years as a CSJ. She taught in St. Louis at St. Cecilia (1950-1953) and St. Margaret of Scotland (1953-1955) grade schools. She moved to Kansas City, Missouri to teach at St. Joseph Home for Girls in 1956 and at Our Lady of Perpetual Help (1957-1960).  From 1960 to 1967, S. Anne taught in Marietta, Georgia at St. Joseph Grade School.  She then returned to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Grade School in Kansas City as principal and teacher until 1973. 

For the next 28 years, S. Anne served in the south.  She was the principal at Little Flower Grade School in Mobile, Alabama from 1973 to 1975 and attended the University of South Alabama from 1975 to 1977 earning her master's in special education.

In Atlanta, Georgia,  S. Anne taught at the Village of St. Joseph (1977-1988), was the substitute supervisor for Marian Manor (1988-1990), was the maintenance assistant for the Kinights of Columbus (1991-1994), and an instructional aid at Dekalb County Mental Retardatin Center (1991-1996).  

Sister Anne retired in 1997 and  moved to St. Louis in 2001. Since 2003, she lived at Nazareth Living Center where she served in prayer and witness until her passing.

A Memorial Mass was held on Feb. 24 at Nazareth Living Center. Her cremains are buried at Resurrection Cemetery.
