S. Mary Engelhard Summers 1914-2013

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Mary Engelhard Summers who passed away on Feb. 11 of atherosclerotic heart disease at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis. She was 99 years old.
S. Mary Engelhard was born on January 22, 1914, in Eland, Wis. to Loomis and Elizabeth (John) Summers. They were members of the Oneida Tribe in Wisconsin. She was baptized into the faith on January 16, 1932. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet (CSJ) on September 14, 1937, and made her final profession on August 15, 1943.
S. Mary spent her years of ministry in St. Louis. She began her service as a general helper at the Nazareth Convent in 1940. Five years later, she went on to work a child care worker/houseparent at the St. Joseph’s Home for the Boys. in 1960, she returned to the Nazareth Convent as a dietary aide, where she remained there for the next 25 years.
In 1985, S. Mary retired and lived in the CSJ’s Jeanne Fontbonne Community. She then moved to Nazareth Living Center in 1990 to carry out her mission of prayer and witness.
A Mass of the Resurrection was held Feb. 18 at the Nazareth Living Center Chapel. Burial is at Resurrection Cemetery.
