Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Janine Arellano who passed away on September 17 of metabolic encephalopathy at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis. She was 79 years of age.

S. Janine was born on December 6, 1931, to parents Anselmo and Victoria (Guerrero) Arellano in Brooklyn, N.Y. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1955, and made her final vows on August 6, 1963. She received a bachelor's degree in Spanish from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1954; a master's in Spanish from St. Louis University, St. Louis, Mo., in 1970; and a certificate in pastoral ministry from Seattle University, Seattle, Wash., in 1982.

From 1958-1963, S. Janine taught at a number of schools in St. Louis, Mo., Green Bay, Wisc., and Waco, Texas. In 1964, she returned to St. Louis and taught Spanish at St. Joseph's Academy for the next 17 years.

After a year-long sabbatical in Seattle, S. Janine once again returned to the St. Louis area and served as resident chaplain at St. Joseph Hospital in Kirkwood in 1982. She then moved to the East Coast and worked as a pastoral associate (1983-1988) and chaplain (1988-1994) at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, Del. S. Janine came back to the Midwest to serve as director of pastoral care at Villa St. Joseph in Overland Park, Kan., from 1994-1998.

In 2000, following two years of transition and a sabbatical, S. Janine was master teacher at the Adult Education and Literacy Center in St. Louis. In 2006, she retired and volunteered at St. Joseph's Academy Convent. S. Janine retired to Nazareth Living Center in 2010.

Funeral arrangements for S. Janine are Thursday, September 22 with a wake at 9:00 a.m. followed by Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00 a.m. Burial is at Resurrection Cemetery.
